Rushes are grass-like perennials which have hollow round stems, producing small inconspicuous flower heads. Juncus prefer moist soils and is often used near ponds, in boggy areas or even partially submerged. Can be used in containers to add height. Grow in full sun to part shade. Juncus effuses ‘Carmans Japan’ has a bright green foliage with a graceful, arching habit and grows to 1 ½ to 2 feet tall and Juncus effusus ‘Spiralis’ has stems that grow in a spiral corkscrew pattern. The Californianative Juncus patens (California Gray Rush) can tolerate dry or moist garden situations and grows to about 18”. Juncus patens ‘Elk Blue’ is blue-gray and finer in texture. Will grow in dry shade or full sun with adequate moisture. In frost prone areas Juncus will turn brown and should be cut down to soil level to allow for new growth in the spring.
