Grown for their dramatic blue gray foliage, species of Elymus are invaluable as a foil for blue and purple flowered plants in the landscape as well as dark colored foliage plants. Elymus produces feathery flower spikes in the summer atop clumps of spiky blue foliage. Two of our most popular varieties include Elymus magellanicus which grows to about 1 ½’ tall and is clump forming and has beautiful metallic blue foliage. Elymus condensatus ‘Canyon Prince’ has silvery blue mature foliage and grows to 4 ft tall and 3 ft wide and spreads slowly by rhizomes. Elymus condensatus ‘Canyon Prince’ is now classified under the genus Leymus. Elymus prefers humidity and good drainage while Leymus ‘Canyon Prince’ is native to coastal Southern California and can therefore be grown under drier conditions.
