Chondropetalum or Cape Rush is a rush-like plant in the Restio group that produces large clumps as has papery sheaths at stem joints. Two species are generally grown: Chondropetalum elephantinum grows 3-5 feet tall and Chondropetalum tectorum grows 2-3 feet tall. Clusters of dark brown flower heads. Plant Chondropetalum in full sun to part shade. They look best with regular to ample water. Use in pots or as an accent plant in the landscape for an architectural presence. Good plant for the coast. Clean out dried out stems as fresh growth appears in the spring.
