Ornamental Grasses

This class of plants refers to grasses and grass like plants which include sedges, rushes, reeds and the stately restios. They provide color, texture and movement in the garden and with more and more varieties being introduced, they have become and integral part of the landscape. Some grasses are evergreen while others go dormant in the winter adding year round interest by their colors and textures. Plant grasses and grass like plants in mixed borders with broad leafed plants, in containers or in prairie-like plantings. Position grasses to catch the early or late sunlight for an ethereal effect. Some grasses are quite drought tolerant while others prefer wet and boggy areas. Most require full sun but some (like Carex sp. and Acorus) can grow in shadier spots. Cut back dried up stalks of deciduous grasses in early spring before new growth appears.
