Grown for their showy flowers and decorative foliage, Bromeliads grow in rosettes of strappy leaves that can be green, gray, orange, purple, striped or spotted. The showy flower spikes in red, yellow, orange, and pink are actually colorful bracts that enclose small insignificant flowers. Generally from Central orSouth America, Bromeliads can be grown easily indoors with the proper conditions. Most require bright, well lit areas (but can tolerate lower light) and average temperatures (55ºF -80ºF). Water Bromeliads by filling the central well in the rosette and allow the soil to get wet as well. Never allow the plant to sit in standing water. Water again when the soil is dry. When the flower spike fades and turns brown, cut it off at the base and continue to enjoy the foliage. Over time, the foliage on the main plant dies, but produces small off-shoots that can be replanted.
