History

In 1971, Joe Sperling started a small sod outlet on an acre of land in the lonely outpost of Calabasas, California. By the late 70’s, the nursery stocked some bedding material and container plants. He bought the remaining 10 acres and began expanding the nursery. He gradually tamed the steep hillside creating plateaus on which most of the container plants are displayed today.

In 1985, a state of the art greenhouse was built for indoor plants. Its custom, high ceiling enabled the nursery to stock large specimens of tropical foliage plants. The former glass greenhouse was transformed into a charming Gift Shop, which has become a favorite shopping spot for the local community.

Over the years, as Calabasas and the surrounding areas have grown, so has the nursery which has become well-known throughout Southern California for its service and superior plant selection. The nursery also specializes in the hard-to-find and the unusual.

The Sperling Nursery family is sad to announce that owner/ founder Joe Sperling passed away on August 7th, 2013.  You will always be in our hearts, Joe!
